Trip Overview

The upper Dolpo Trek takes you to the far western region of Nepal. The Dolpo district lies in the Karnali province. The area is a remote and secluded area of Nepal. Trekking in the Dolpo region can be challenging. There is no proper development of any infrastructure. You can explore the magnificent high Himalayan valleys, rugged trails, and unique culture of distant, far-west Nepal. This can be an experience for a lifetime. The landscape of the Dolpo resembles the Tibetan plateau. Trekking in the Dolpo region gives you an intellectual feeling of being in the wilderness.

The Shey Phokshundo Lake lies in the central part of the region. The lake is also the deepest in Nepal. A large portion of the area is covered by Sheyphokshundo National Park. The national park shelters a variety of flora and fauna. It is also home to endangered flora and fauna. The oldest Shey monastery is also part of this trek. The influence of Tibetan Buddhist culture can be seen in this region and is also the main highlight of this trek. The gorgeous Dhaulagiri and the Churi Himal ranges surround the east, west, and south of the Dolpo region. Thus, the magnificent view of Dhaulagiri, the Chure Himal range, and the snowy peaks are the backdrop throughout the journey.

Trekking in this area compulsorily needs a special kind of permit. Therefore, you cannot travel independently on the trail. The number of teahouses is limited; you may need to carry a tent too. Trekking in this area can be challenging, but it is all worth it when you encounter the Himalayan valleys, quaint Lake Phoskhundo, lush vegetation, and the unique culture of this area.

Explore the secluded area of Nepal and get more insights into the diverse culture and vegetation with the Highland Eco Trek.

Basic Information

The Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek is an enthralling excursion across the untamed and isolated environments of Nepal’s Dolpo region. Some fundamental details of this trek are as follows:

Location: Upper Dolpo is situated close to the Tibetan border in northwest Nepal. Usually, the trek begins in Juphal, a small airfield that can be reached from Nepalgunj by plane, and concludes in Jomsom, a town located in the Mustang area.

Duration: Depending on the trekker’s speed and individual itinerary, the walk often takes 25 to 30 days to finish.

Altitude: The hike will take you through high mountain passes and up to elevations of 16,400 feet, or more than 5,000 meters. To prevent altitude sickness, hikers must properly acclimate.

Best season: Trekking in upper Doplo, Nepal, during the monsoon season (mid-June to early September) has some advantages, and trekkers can do it in mid-October. Take in fewer people, lush valleys, and bustling villages. If you desire drier conditions, try higher-altitude hikes like the Upper Dolpo Circuit and Lower Dolpo Trek; avoid lower-altitude routes that may trigger mudslides. Discover Nepal’s natural beauty in all of its splendour during this less-travelled yet bountiful season.

Permits: The Lower and Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit, provided by the Nepal government through registered trekking agencies, is one of the permits that hikers must frequently obtain for this trip.

Accommodation and Meals: Teahouses, campsites, and homestays in nearby villages are among the lodging choices along the trekking route. Lower elevations are more likely to have basic teahouses, whereas more isolated locations frequently need camping, and we have our kitchen crew backed on campsites.

Scenic Beauty: The trip offers amazing views of the Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and Kanjirowa summits, among other Himalayan peaks.
Trekkers have the opportunity to interact culturally with the indigenous people of the Dolpo region, including the Tibetan Buddhists and the Dolpo ethnic group. You can visit historic villages and old monasteries to learn more about the regional customs, cultural traditions, and wildlife habitat.

Shey Phoksundo Lake: Known for its turquoise waters and untamed surroundings, Shey Phoksundo Lake is an incredibly stunning alpine lake and one of the trek’s main highlights.
Difficult crosses: The walk crosses over several difficult mountain passes, including Jugben La at 5,550 meters (18,040 feet) and Kang La Pass at 5,350 meters. These routes offer thrilling challenges and breathtaking vistas.
finest seasons to hike the Upper Dolpo Jomsom because of the generally consistent weather and clear skies that make for ideal trekking conditions.

Difficulty Level: Because of the trek’s remote location, high altitude pass, and rough terrain, it is regarded as difficult. Trekkers who want to go on this journey should be physically fit and have prior trekking experience in the high altitudes of the Himalayas.
